Next-Gen Logistics: Advanced Automated Warehouse System Launched in Ontario, Canada

Featured Image

An advanced automated product picking and packing system, developed by Systemex Automation, has been successfully installed in a 125,000 square-foot distribution center in Ontario, Canada. This system revolutionizes warehouse operations and sets new standards for efficiency and accuracy in the logistics industry.

The system integrates cutting-edge technologies and processes designed to optimize productivity, reduce reliance on labor, and improve order accuracy.

System Overview:

Designed to optimize the picking and packing process, it utilizes Geek+ automated guided vehicles (AGVs) and advanced packing technologies.

It consists of five main zones:

  1. Automated Storage and Retrieval System (ASRS)
  2. Moving operation
  3. Picking/packing operation
  4. E-commerce section
  5. Outfeed.

1 - Automated Storage and Retrieval System (ASRS) Zone:

  • Storage: Master cases are stored in racks using Geek+ RS8 automated vehicles, coupled with over 450 P40 automated guided vehicles (AGVs). The ASRS system includes more than 6,000 storage locations for master cases, spread across 27-foot-high shelves, thus optimizing the use of vertical space in the distribution center for maximum storage efficiency. A separate section of over 1,000 locations is dedicated to high-velocity products.
  • Retrieval: The AGVs pick the master cases and present them at stations that feed into the packing area.
  • Inventory Management: Empty master cases are managed automatically within the system and can be recycled as shipping cases, resulting in carton savings.

2&3 - Moving, Picking and Packing and Operations:

  • Robot Cells: Nine robot cells equipped with ABB robots, vision systems, and vacuum grippers manage packing operations at a rate of approximately 8,000 picks per hour. An algorithm individually optimizes each order to minimize unused space in each case.
  • Order Fulfillment and Movement: The system ensures efficient and accurate packing, with robots alternating between picking products from master cases on either side, powered by more than 450 units of Geek+ P40 AGVs.

4 - E-commerce Picking Solution:

An e-commerce goods picking solution using Geek+ P800 automated guided vehicles (AGVs) brings shelves to a picking station, eliminating wasted time for the picker to move down aisles. This allows for an increase in output and efficiency of up to 1,000 picks per hour.

5 - Outfeed:
The output section moves shipping boxes from the warehouse production lines to their next destination. This section includes a SCADA system, audit stations, quality control, printing and application stations, box sealers, 11 dedicated output lines for carriers, and over 500 linear feet of conveyor systems. Managing a throughput of over 400 boxes per hour, this section requires meticulous coordination of equipment and technologies to ensure accuracy, speed, and reliability in the supply chain process.

Advantages of the System:

  • Modularity: Easily scalable with the addition of packing cells and automated guided vehicles (AGVs).
  • Enhanced Efficiency and Quality: Vision-guided picking, barcode scanning, and weight checks enhance order accuracy and productivity.
  • Reduced Labor Needs: Automation decreases reliance on labor-intensive processes.
  • Safety: Efficient and secure AGV solutions do not require complex conveyor systems.
  • Integrated solution: The system is fully integrated with the client’s ERP and inventory management (WMS) software, providing real-time order tracking and improved replenishment through predictive production.
